Frequently Asked Questions

  • I use different therapy approaches based on your needs and goals. These may include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Adlerian Therapy, Somatic Processing techniques, and/or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Together, we’ll figure out what works best for you. I believe you are the expert on your own life, and my role is to use my knowledge of psychology to support and guide you.

Visit our modalities blog in the link below to understand the different modalities and the power they have in therapy.

  • After we introduce ourselves, I’ll review the consent forms you’ve completed. Then, I’ll invite you to share a bit about what has brought you to counselling, and we’ll discuss how I can best support you.

I know a lot about counselling and strategies to overcome challenges but you are the expert of you. We will work together to find a plan that you are comfortable with and we will go from there. You are in the drivers seat and we can go as quickly or slowly as you would like. I am a firm believer that the client knows best and welcome clients to share their experience of the sessions on an ongoing basis.

Whether or not it would be helpful to do a full assessment to determine comorbidities of the presenting problem can be done and is recommended so that the complete clinical picture can be seen. The formal assessment takes 2-3 sessions depending on the complexity of the clients challenges. It is up to the client to decide if this would be helpful. Screening questions are within the initial Client Form that you complete prior to the first session.

Note: For an additional fee, a letter providing clinical impressions can be generated for documentation and will be sent to you to give to other healthcare providers. If a formal diagnosis is wanted or needed after the assessment is completed, Dr. Antonio Ocana, GP, will review the collected information and write a letter with confirmation of diagnoses (if warranted). Written documentation of the diagnoses will be provided by Dr. Ocana and will cost approximately $65-$150.

  • The cost of counselling depends on whether you have insurance and the type of coverage you have. Check with your Human Resources department to see if you have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). If you do, ask:

    • Does it cover a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC)?

    • How much coverage is available per year?

    • Is the coverage based on a calendar year or a fiscal year?

    • What is the maximum reimbursement per session?

This will help you understand your coverage options.

    Session Costs

    • Initial Appointment (75 minutes): $285

    • Subsequent Appointments (50 minutes): $190, (75 minutes): $285.

Once you are signed up on the Jane app, you’ll receive forms for your first session. Completing these forms helps me understand your unique needs and informs our work together, saving both time and money.

    Sliding Scale
A limited number of sliding scale spots are available for those requiring financial assistance. During your first session, we’ll discuss your situation and needs to determine a rate that works within your means. We’ll review this periodically to adjust if your circumstances change.

    Subsidy Programs
You may be eligible for reimbursement through the following programs:

    • First Nations Health Authority (FNHA)

    • Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP)

    • ICBC: Contact your adjustor to check if RCC counselling is covered.

    • Sunlife/Lumino Insurance

Many extended health benefits or EAPs also cover counselling services provided by an RCC. Please note that direct billing is not available at this time.
